Steam trade holds and escrow, explained

Why Steam sits on your items for days, and how to make it stop.

Steam Levels Up Guide Updated September 2026

A trade hold, which Steam calls escrow, is when Steam accepts a trade but keeps the items for days before handing them over. It catches a lot of people out. Here is why it happens and what it means for a level up order.

Why Steam holds a trade

Escrow exists to protect hijacked accounts: if a thief cannot move items out instantly, there is time to recover them. Steam applies it when your account is not protected by the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator. Without it, a trade can be held for up to 15 days.

The trade hold notice on the Steam Levels Up order form
A hold does not block your order. There is a box on the order form for exactly this.

How to remove the hold

  1. Install the Steam mobile app Get it from store.steampowered.com/mobile.
  2. Turn on the Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator Sign in and enable it in the app's Steam Guard section.
  3. Wait out the activation period The authenticator has to have been active for a qualifying period before Steam trusts it. Enabling it the same day you want to trade will not lift the hold.
  4. Confirm trades on your phone From then on you approve each trade in the app and items move immediately.

Never remove the authenticator to rush a trade. Removing it puts the hold back on, and anyone telling you to disable it is trying to rob you. Steam's own rules are the authority here, so check Steam Support for the current periods that apply to your account.

A hold is not the same as a cooldown

  • Escrow is about your account security and affects the whole trade.
  • The CS2 seven day cooldown is about the item. Anything traded in Counter-Strike 2 cannot move again for seven days, however secure your account is. That is why we deliver skin-funded orders after the cooldown.
  • A private inventory is neither. It only stops people browsing your items, and it does not stop a trade offer.

What we do if you are held

Nothing stops. Tick I have a trade hold or private inventory on the order form and we will:

  • run a small test trade first, so you can verify us and we can confirm your account is ready;
  • agree the timing with you before anything large moves;
  • hold your quote while the escrow period runs.

A hold is an inconvenience, not a blocker.

Staying safe while you wait

We only ever use standard Steam trade offers. Nobody here will ask for your password, your Steam Guard codes or access to your account, and you should refuse anyone who does, including anyone claiming to be us. Our only owner account is NavidArtworks, and the bots are listed on the homepage. Check the profile before you trade.
